Family Vacation?  Yay!

I'm not even being sarcastic.  There's ups and downs to traveling with family but considering my financial constraints, I'm all for it!!  Last year, my parents decided they want to start a new tradition of going on annual family vacations.  I immediately jumped at the opportunity to plan the trip.  Prior to this trip, the only trip I had really done extensive planning for was a two week roadtrip from Houston to Los Angeles with a budget of around $1100 per person.

This time, I was given a budget of $3,000, along with my dad's AA mileage to drastically reduce air fare.  After extensive research, I put together a week-long vacation plan to Oahu Island, Hawaii.  I have to admit, I was rather pleased with myself and I felt that all my planning paid off!  The trip was a blast despite minor setbacks (my parents luggage was sent to Japan!) and I was able to try out my new Canon Digital Rebel XT.  The downside of being the photographer of the family is that I don't end up in being many pictures! Thus, I pushed my mom to purchase the professional photo taken at the Paradise Cove Luau.  I think it came out pretty well (I'm the one with the camera bag and camera hanging from my neck)!

On a side note, I've been thinking about making a travel/photography blog.  I haven't decided on name or where to have this blog, so this will have to do for now. Any suggestions?

Next post: change for this year's Thanksgiving trip!

Do you have the bug?

I have the bug.  Nothing to worry about-- it's the travel bug.  Flipping channels on the TV, I find myself stopping on the travel channel more and more often lately, drawn to it by the stunning landscapes, curiously dressed inhabitants, and unfamiliar foods flashing on the screen.  My mind wanders to grand adventures such as making the 4-day trek to Machu Picchu or facing sharks while scuba diving the Blue Hole off the coast of Belize or perhaps just sitting on a train travelling across China.  And the pictures I could take!!  If only I could find some way to quit my day job and find a job that could combine photography, traveling, and adventure (all while making enough to pay off my loans/debt!).

I've been reading online blogs about people who've made traveling a priority in their life, taking a hiatus from work (some over a year!) to explore the world.  Now THAT would be aweosme!

Caye Caulker, Belize

For my family Thanksgiving trip this year, I'm thinking Belize.  Given that this is a family trip, I'm making an attempt to cater to my family's wishes-- avoid overly long carrides and public transportation; find good fruit and historical ruins; and for me, bring on the adventure!  Belize is an English-speaking country with an abundance of activities-- exploring Mayan ruins, snorkeling with sharks, high adventure caving, and also lying out on one of the many caye's (islands) off the mainland.

Surprisingly, Belize is one of the more expensive destinations in Central America.  Taking that into consideration, I'd opt for staying at cheaper places and spending more on fun things, but for my parents' sake, I'm looking for accommodations that are more comfortable.

I'm also trying to determine which ruins I can visit and enjoy without a tour guide and which ones we should go with a tour.  I've figured out that Actun Tunichil Muknal, Caracol, and Barton Creek Cave require tour guides and Xunantunich probably doesn't need one but I'm not too sure beyond that.  There's also Lamanai, Altun Ha, Tikal (Guatemala), and El Pilar

Anyone been?  Advice?  Does anyone even still read xanga entries?

Marc pulled over on the side of the road so that I could take a picture of some roosters hanging out in the street.  When I approached, one of the roosters started running and I took a few shots.  I, unfortunately, did not remember to change the light settings so the picture isn't as warm as I'd like.  Lesson learned.

This is Fry.  Sometimes he sticks his tongue out a little bit.  No idea why but it greatly amuses me and I finally caught it on camera.
